Interview Techniques in Recruitment: How to Choose the Right Candidate

Why Is the Interview the Heart of Recruitment?

CV screening, tests and reference checks are all important steps in a hiring process, but most of the final decision is made in the interview. A well-designed interview reveals not only a candidate's technical knowledge but also the way they solve problems, how they fit into a team and what motivates them. A poorly designed one leads to a bad hire, and therefore to lost time and money.

Structured Interviews: The Most Effective Method

Research shows that the method which improves hiring success the most is the structured interview. In this approach:

  • Questions are prepared in advance around the competencies the role requires.
  • Every candidate is asked the same questions in the same order.
  • Answers are evaluated against a standard scoring scale.

The result is a comparable and fair assessment, rather than subjective verdicts along the lines of "I just had a good feeling about them".

Competency-Based Questions and the STAR Technique

Past behavior is the best predictor of future performance. So instead of "What would you do?", prefer "What have you done before?" questions:

  • "Can you tell me about a serious disagreement within your team and how you resolved it?"
  • "How did you manage a piece of work you had to deliver under pressure?"

Listen to the answer through the STAR frame: what was the situation, what task did they take on, what actions did they take and what was the result? The difference between "we did it" and "I did this" is what reveals their real contribution.

Common Mistakes

  • Surrendering to first impressions: Deciding in the first 30 seconds and using the rest of the interview to confirm that decision.
  • Leading questions: Questions that hide the answer inside them, such as "You enjoy teamwork, don't you?"
  • Not taking notes: By the end of the day candidates blur into one another; keep short, objective notes in every interview.
  • Deciding alone: Wherever possible, collect independent scores from at least two interviewers.
